IIHF World Championship

While it would not be impossible to host the tournament next year, the costs might prove to be too much.

When will the next home tournament take place?

The organizing committee of the World Championship in Minsk and Riga would be willing to enter in discussions with the Swiss organizing committee about a potential postponement of their tournament, Viesturs Koziols, the General Secretary of the Latvian federation tells the SonntagsZeitung. The same applies to the Finns whose home tournament is supposed to take place in 2022.

However, while they are willing to discuss things, it would, of course, cost the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation some money for the World Championship to be held in Switzerland next year. "The SIHF also has to clarify the insurance issues first. And then they must decide whether they want a postponement to 2021. If so, they must request this from the IIHF by mid-May," René Fasel tells the same source.

Also, if the SIHF will go down that route, it will cost them, Fasel states: "Depending on how Switzerland reacts, almost anything is possible. Perhaps the Swiss will be interested in a tournament in 2021 or 2023, or 2026, but this will involve high costs, as the organizers, especially 2021 and 2022, will have to be compensated accordingly."
