Swiss Ice Hockey Cup

In 2014, the Swiss Ice Hockey Cup was resurrected. Now, it looks like this season will be its last edition.

Has the SIHC run its course?

As the Blick reports, the decision has been made: there will be no longer Cup games on the schedule of the Swiss hockey teams after the 2020-21 season. The official reason: with the championship games, the CHL, and the preparations for the Olympics the schedule is too full.

However, according to the same source, the real reason can be found elsewhere: the teams would like to add two more qualification rounds to the championship as they would likely gain more money from that.

Back at the end of June and thus before the National League's separation from the federation, the Director of the National League & Swiss League Denis Vaucher had this to say on the SIHF website: "Negotiations [with Ringier Sports] are ongoing, but it will certainly not be easy in the current situation with the crisis we are in. The money is certainly an important point, but there are also fewer dates available as it will be an Olympic season."
