Together with Kevin Fiala (drafted by the Nashville Predators), the 18-year-old Danish forward was selected by the Winnipeg Jets in the first round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft at the end of last June in Philadelphia.

Ehlers went through EHC Biel's youth organization and gave his National League A debut with the Seelanders in season 2012-13 (5 points in 18 games), before he moved to the Halifax Mooseheads in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).

With the Mooseheads in season 2013-14, Ehlers was able to score a total of 60 goals and 72 assist in 79 games. His impressive season saw him earn a multitude of QMJHL awards including: Rookie of the Year, Offensive Rookie of the Year and Best Professional Prospect along with All-Rookie Team and Second Team All-Star selections.

Internationally, Ehlers was part of Denmark's gold medal-winning team at the 2014 U20-World Championship, where he recorded three goals and eight assists in five games.
