IIHF Women's World Championship

After a conference call with the participating teams, the IIHF Council met today and decided that the 2021 IIHF Women's Worlds will take place between August 21-31, with a venue still to be determined.

The Women's World Championships in Canada's Halifax and Truro initially set for May 6-16 were cancelled last week by the government of the concerned province, Nova Scotia, due to safety concerns regarding the coronavirus.

“In our meeting with the teams, unfortunately, we were unable to achieve a full consensus on the dates, with some teams preferring to play in early September and others in late August," IIHF president René Fasel explains. "But we need to respect as much as possible the start of various Women’s leagues around the world, and also recognize the needs of the four teams that must prepare for the Women’s Olympic Qualification tournament in November.”

The IIHF together with Hockey Canada will now move towards evaluating potential venues for the Women’s Worlds in Canada, with new host cities expected to be chosen and announced in the upcoming weeks.
