IIHF World Championship

As reported by Watson, the only player from the NHL that might be unavailable to head coach Patrick Fischer is Timo Meier.

On principle, every Swiss player in NHL has given their availability to suit up for the Swiss national team in the 2023 IIHF World Championship, which will be held from May 12 to 28. For some players, however, a participation will obviously only be possible if their team will not advance at least to the third round of the playoffs.

In the case of Timo Meier, however, even if the New Jersey Devils were to be eliminated from the playoffs, he might still pass on the Worlds due to his contractual situation: a restricted free agent at the end of the season, he will not join the national team if he has not signed a new contract by the time of the Worlds.

At the moment, only the four Swiss Devils (Timo Meier, Nico Hischier, Jonas Siegenthaler, and Akira Schmid) have qualified for the playoffs. Kevin Fiala (Los Angeles Kings) and Denis Malgin (Colorado Avalanche) are currently in a playoff spot, while Nino Niederreiter (Winnipeg Jets) and Roman Josi (Nashville Predators) are battling for a wildcard spot.

On the other hand, the season of Pius Suter (Detroit Red Wings), Tim Berni (Columbus Blue Jackets), Janis Moser (Arizona Coyotes), and Philipp Kurashev (Chicago Blackhawks) is almost over. As known, however, Kurashev sustained a season-ending injury recently.
