The Finnish forward retired at the end of the 2018-19 season at the age of 40, after one last season in the Liiga with HIFK.

As explained to the Finnish newspaper Iltalehti, Tommi Santala decided to end his career and stay closer to his family without making a big deal out of it. As for the future, the Finn admits that "it would be great to be able to continue with ice hockey, but there are many different things to do".

Tommi Santala is very well known in Switzerland as he played for ten seasons, from 2008 to 2018, in Kloten, for which he scored 140 goals and put up 308 assists in 511 National League games. These numbers put him in the fifth place for most points with EHC Kloten. With the Flughafenstädter he won the Swiss Ice Hockey Cup in 2017.
