Despite being unsigned, the defenseman is currently practicing with the New York Islanders. He hopes to eventually land a new contract.

Luca Sbisa - another shot in the NHL?

The New York Islanders signed Luca Sbisa to a PTO for the duration of the NHL-preseason, but did not manage to earn himself a contract. However, he is still practicing with the team and, as he tells the Tages-Anzeiger, is taking part in everything - besides playing.

Sbisa mentions that in hindsight, he probably should have accepted the contract extension offered to him by his former team, the Vegas Golden Knights, two years ago. But then injury trouble came and he did not get any further offer by the Knights. The Islanders eventually signed him, but last season he only suited up a total of nine times for them.

Now, 29-year-old is hoping for another chance with New York, which might come after they trade away a defenseman or they need an injury replacement. He has set himself a deadline. If he has not gotten any offers by the end of October, he will reconsider his situation. By then, returning to Switzerland would also become an option for him.
