National Hockey League

The Montreal Canadiens have placed Mark Streit on unconditional waivers today. If no other team from the National Hockey League claims him within the next 24 hours, he will be a free agent again.

Streit was put on regular waivers by the Canadiens on Thursday this week. 24 hours later, he cleared waivers unclaimed and was officially assigned to the Habs' AHL affiliate, the Rocket de Laval. The 39-year-old veteran, however, refused to report to Laval. Instead, he decided to take the next few days to evaluate his options, according to reports.

Apparently, Streit has now decided to "mutually" terminate his contract with the Canadiens, which means that if he clears unconditional waivers tomorrow, he will be a free agent again and theoretically be able to sign with another team in Europe, Switzerland - or elsewhere. While the Habs will save $655,000 against their salary cap, Mark Streit will receive $45,000 for his twelve days of service on the team's active roster.

In recent days, several North American sources speculated that Streit could indeed decide to turn his back on the NHL/AHL and return to Switzerland, from where he would then target another run at the upcoming Winter Olympics. Streit for his part, however, pointed out multiple times in the past that a return to the National League is not an option. Therefore, a final announcement to retire seems not to be unlikely, too.
