"Roman has led by example every day of his life," head coach Peter Laviolette said in the Preds' press release. "He is respected by all of his teammates and his peers. His work ethic, communication skills and accountability to his team make him the perfect choice to lead this group moving forward."

Former Nashville forward Mike Fisher decided to retire from professional hockey, leaving the Preds in need of a new captain. They now settled on Josi, making him the second Swiss captain in NHL history. The first was Mark Streit who captained the New York Islanders from 2011 to 2013.

Josi was drafted by the Predators in 2008 and has been a regular in their lineup since the 2011-12 season. The 27-year-old defenseman has played in a total of 458 games for Nashville, scoring 72 goals and 191 assists.
