Phil Varone already played in the KHL in the 2020-21 season, so he is familiar with the league. In 2021, he signed with Lausanne HC but then changed clubs in November to become part of SC Bern. The Bears were looking for an injury replacement at the time.
Varone recorded two goals and five assists in 13 games for Lausanne HC as well as six goals and twelve assists in 29 games for SC Bern last season.
