The 28-year-old Swedish forward has a two-year contract in place with Barys Nur-Sultan, but like many foreign-born players, he would like to pursue his career elsewhere given the current political situation.

"I first thought the contract was dissolved. Then it turned out it wasn't," Jakob Lilja tells HockeyNews.se. "That's where I've been for the last few months and that's probably why I haven't signed anywhere, or I haven't been able to."

Apparently, he had been close to signing a deal with a Swiss team but that "has run out of steam a bit now." As it looks like now, the forward would need to buy himself out of the contract, but the process will not be easy. Some interested clubs have tried to negotiate something with the KHL team, but so far to no avail.

Jakob Lilja has suited up for Barys for the past two seasons. Last season, the Swede recorded 16 goals and eleven assists in 47 games for the KHL team.
