EV Zug has been talking about increasing the capacity of the Bossard Arena from 7,200 to 9,000 spectators for about two years now.

EV Zug will have to be patient

In March 2020, a first study of the City of Zug showed that it is possible, in theory, to extend the arena. According to the Luzerner Zeitung, since then, two different options have been considered for the project.

In the preferred option, the roof of the arena would be raised and an expansion would be completed by adding a floor to the north, southwest, and east. This would create about 1,800 seats more in the stands and about 800 more in the catering area. The costs would come to about CHF 44 million.

There is also a lower-cost version (CHF 30 million) of that option which would create 1,700 seats more in the stands and 700 more in the catering area. This is the option recommended by the Office of Construction Economics.

The most expensive option (CHF 51 million) would create 2,100 seats more and about 1,000 in the catering area. To achieve this increase, a new roof would have to be built. Whichever option gets chosen in the end, it is important that the expansion can be carried out without interfering with the hockey season.

The City Council of Zug would also like to transfer the property under a building lease for a yet-to-be-determined building lease interest. This way, the responsibility for the entire complex and its further development would go to EV Zug. They would, however, as the building lease holder have full control over the use and revenues of the Bossard Arena.

As it is usually with arena projects, this entire development process, as well as the transfer of the property, will, however, still take a lot of time, as a lot of political hurdles have to be overcome. It is expected that at the earliest, an expansion of the arena can become a reality as of 2025/2026.
