National League

The Swede's NHL ambitions are no secret, but so far, he seems to like it in Zürich and might even stay longer than originally thought.

A success story thus far: Grönborg and the ZSC Lions

"I feel very comfortable in Zürich, I want to stay as long as the club wants me. All I can say about the NHL is that there are a lot of European coaches who have the format to coach in that league," Rikard Grönborg tells the NZZ am Sonntag.

Gröneborg negotiated with HC Davos (now Christian Wohlwend's team) and the Buffalo Sabres (now Ralph Krueger's team) before he decided to go with the ZSC Lions' offer, even though he was told that it was the "most difficult job in Europe". However, this might have just been what drew him to the job the most: "What connects the ZSC Lions and me is that we have very high expectations."

After last season's playoff miss, the ZSC Lions are back to the number one spot in the National League with Grönborg as a head coach. However, if one looks at points per game, HC Davos is still in the lead there, with five games less than the Lions, as they average 2.06 points per game. The Lions average 2.0.
