The three-year entry-level contract of the 21-year-old Swiss goaltender will kick in as of the upcoming 2021-22 season.

Akira Schmid has been picked as 136th overall (fifth round) by the New Jersey Devils in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. Now, almost three years later, they have signed the 21-year-old to an entry-level contract, as General Manager Tom Fitzgerald announced.

The youngster, who is a product of the SCL Tigers' organization, most recently played for the Sioux City Musketeers in the United States Hockey League (USHL), the most important junior hockey league in the USA. He ranked first in regular-season save percentage and goals-against average.
