Reports indicate that the former IIHF president has received Russian citizenship and partly owns a Russian company. Fans do not like that.

As the Freiburger Nachrichten writes, voices are being raised on social media demanding that René Fasel's name in the BCF Arena be removed due to his ties with Russia and Vladimir Putin. HC Fribourg-Gottéron's president Hubert Waeber confirms to La Liberté that the issue will be discussed at the next board meeting: "I don't like to mix sport and politics, as I've already said. But we have to think about it frankly, that's clear".

Waeber believes that an action such as removing Fasel's name should be considered carefully as he explains to La Liberté: "If we remove Fasel's name, then maybe others will want Slava Bykov's name to be removed as well, and so on. That's why we have to take time to think about it." Bykov caused some stir in an interview last June when he was asked about his opinion on the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
