NHL - The Colorado Avalanche assigned their 22-year-old rookie goaltender Calvin Pickard to their AHL affiliate today. However, as head coach Patrick Roy told the media this morning, Reto Berra will likely not see any ice time.

Roy announced that they are planning to play Semyon Varlamov as often as possible and if the time comes to give him a break, they are likely to call up Pickard again. The head coach specifically mentioned their back-to-back games against the Washington Capitals and the Carolina Hurricanes in mid-January.

Asked about what this will do to the confidence of 27-year-old Reto Berra, he was very clear that this should not be a reason to play him: "You are not going to find it, if you are feeling sorry for yourself. He's gonna have to earn it, he's gonna have to work hard. [...] Unfortunately for him, there is a guy that came in and played outstanding for us. And... He is lucky today that Pickard is not 25, 26 years old."

However, Roy also added at the end of the post-practice scrum that Berra might get a chance to play, but this will depend on how well he will do in practice. Still, the Swiss international has only played once in the last four weeks and will likely not see any game action in the next two weeks as well. Certainly not an ideal situation for the goalie - to put it mildly.
