The former forward of Genève-Servette HC has taken his time to evaluate the options but eventually decided to hang up his skates.

At the age of 39 and without a contract for the 2024-25 season, Daniel Winnik has decided to retire from professional hockey. The Canadian had not received an extension offer from the Grenats for his expiring contract and was therefore considering joining another team in Switzerland but after "a lot of thought and careful consideration" he opted for retirement.

Winnik spent the last six seasons of his career in Geneva, winning a Swiss championship in 2023, the Champions Hockey League in 2024 and a Spengler Cup in 2019. Before that, he spent eleven seasons in the NHL.
