Kirill Slepets opened the scoring for the Russians in the 5th minute of play. However, the goal should not have counted as it was scored after an offside, but the Swiss head coach Christian Wohlwend did not challenge the goal. Nikita Shashkov then put the Russians up by 2-0 in the 14th minute. The Swiss were outshot in the first period with twelve to six.

The Swiss started good into the second period with Valentin Nussbaumer scoring four minutes in, but the Russians re-established their two-goal lead eight minutes later with a goal by Klim Kostin. Only three minutes later, Yannick Brüschweiler scored the second goal for the Swiss, making it 3-2.
