Whitney has appeared in seven games with the Panthers last season before he was reassigned to the AHL's San Antonio Rampage, where he recorded 23 points (7 goals, 16 assists) in 45 games.
So far, the native of Boston has played in 519 NHL games over nine seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins (2005-09), Anaheim Ducks (2009-10), Edmonton Oilers (2010-13) and the Florida Panthers (2013-14), scoring a total of 273 points.
