The 19-year-old goaltender will replace Tobias Stephan, who will leave GSHC at the end of the season and join EVZ, in net. He has had an impressive start in the National League A, when he had a shoutout against GSHC in a 3-0 victory for the ZSC Lions. Apparently that caused Genève-Servette HC to look in further on the young goalie.
As Chris McSorley says about Nyffeler: "He is very clever and competitive , in the same vein as Benjamin Conz. He is one of the major hopefuls of our country. We are therefore very proud that he has accepted our offer. "
As the Tribune de Genève reports, McSorley is also looking to add a second goaltender to build a competitve situation within his system. As of now, he is not yet certain, who that will be, but it will certainly not be Robert Mayer: "According to my contacts in North America, there is little chance that Robert Mayer plays in Europe."
Nyffeler himself is happy to sign with GSHC. According to him, there was one major factor that convinced him to sign with Geneva: "Chris McSorley has fully convinced me that he is counting on me. But it is especially the fact that they have Sébastien Beaulieu (the renowned goalie coach of GSHC), who contacted me first, that has greatly weighed into my decision. I know Sebastien, I participated in his camps."
The young goaltender knows of McSorley's plan to add a second, more experienced netminder and he doesn't mind the fact at all. He says that he can profit from the experience of an older goalie and that the competition will challenge him and hopefully push him to become a better player.
Melvin Nyffeler has gained his first experiences in the National League A this season with the ZSC Lions. He spent his entire junior career within the Lion's system and is now turning a new page in his young career with his contract with the Eagles. He has managed to achieve a 1.26 GAA and 0.960 save percentage in eleven regular season games with the ZSC Lions.
