NLA - The ZSC Lions had a very successful 2013/14 season on the sportive side of things. Unfortunately, this did not translate to the financial side of their buisness, as they have to deal with a net loss of CHF 719,000.

As the Tages Anzeiger reports, the loss will eventually end up at CHF 1.2 million, since they also support their Nachwuchs AG every year with CHF 0.5 million. Now, this of course does seem to be a siginficant loss for the Lions, especially in a Championship-winning season, but there are various reasons for this.

As CFO Fritz Eichenberger explains at the general assembly, the first two rounds of the playoffs against Lausanne HC and Genève-Servette did not bring in a lot of fans in from the Lake Geneva region, adding the lower prizes for the Lions' season ticket holder, this resulted in less earnings at the box office.

Furthermore, they used approximately CHF 480,000 as a one-time investment in marketing (e.g. light show before the game). The highest costs are of course the player salaries with CHF 13.3 million, but that was to be expected. However, thanks to their Chairman of the Board of Directors Walter Frey, the ZSC Lions are still able to show a positive result, as the net loss will be covered by the ZLE Betriebs AG.
