The 29-year-old defenseman played his fair share of NHL games with the Ottawa Senators and the Calgary Flames, putting up 14 points (two goals. twelve assists) in 94 games. Most of his professional career, however, took place in the AHL, where he scored 168 points (41 goals, 127 assists) in 311 games for the Binghamton Senators and the Abbotsford Heat.

With the Senators, he also achieved the biggest success of his career so far, winning the Calder Cup (AHL-championship) in the 2010/11 season together with Ryan Keller (who was their captain for that season) and Roman Wick. Smith will be the ZSC Lions fifth import-player.
