Swiss Women's Hockey Cup

There were some surprising results in the round of 16 at this year’s Swiss Women’s Hockey Cup: SWHL B team SC Langenthal (photo) beat SC Weinfelden of the SWHL A and the C-league team EC Will eliminated last year’s bronze medalist Zunzgen Sissach.

For SC Langenthal’s women’s team, which was promoted to the second highest tier after its first year of existence, this victory against Weinfelden had to be one of the biggest achievement in the team’s history. Langenthal was ahead 2-0 after 37 minutes against a disappointing SC Weinfelden. Just one day before, Weinfelden beat BOMO Thun in the SWHL A. Even though SCW managed to get one back thanks to a powerplay goal, this was not enough despite another powerplay opportunity in the last two minutes.

EC Wil was responsible for the second upset. In their first year in the SWHL C, the team from the canton of St. Gallen is dominating the Eastern group of the C League; not least because of Czech national team player Simona Studentova. The 3-1 victory over last year’s bronze medallist Zunzgen-Sissach (formerly Laufen) shows that they aspire to great heights in Wil.

In the quarterfinals in mid-December, in which last year’s two finalists, the ZSC Lions and Neuchâtel Hockey Academy, will also participate, there are still four lower-division clubs (1x SWHL C, 3 x SWHL A). They will all face an SWHL A team.
