WOMEN'S LEAGUE

In the Swiss Women’s Hockey League, the battle for the fourth and last playoff spot is likely over. The race for first place, on the other hand, is still wide open.

EV BOMO Thun won the arguably decisive game in Weinfelden 4-1. Andrea Schranz (picture) paved the way with her three goals for a convincing victory. Thus, BOMO is five points ahead of Weinfelden and, therefore, they have virtually clinched the fourth playoff spot. In the remaining four games, the two teams will face the same opponents. A victory against SC Reinach is mandatory. However, it is unlikely that Weinfelden can win two out of three games against the three best teams in the league.

HC Lugano consolidated their standing thanks to an impressive 9-2 victory against the Neuchâtel Hockey Academy and a 16-1 “voluntary exercise” against Reinach. The game against Neuchâtel, however, was a close one for two periods. After a 3-1 lead, the Bianconere Rebecca Kohler (4) and Laura Desboeufs (2) scored the decisive goals in the third period. Nonetheless, the race for the top spot is still open since the ZSC Lions fulfilled their compulsory tasks as well, beating Weinfelden 12-1 and Reinach 12-0. Lugano and the Lions will face each other again on January 14 in Zurich. This season so far, the respective home team has won this duel.

With twelve points (nine goals, three assists), HC Lugano’s Swiss-Canadian Rebecca Kohler collected the most points this weekend. Christine Meier (ZSC Lions) put up ten points (six goals, four assists); Isabel Waidacher (ZSC Lions) and Carly Payerl scored nine points each.

SWHL A, Results: HC Lugano – SC Reinach 16:1 (3:0, 6:0, 7:1). Neuchâtel Hockey Academy – EV BOMO Thun 3:2 (2:0, 1:2, 0:0). ZSC Lions – SC Weinfelden 12:1 (1:1, 6:0, 5:0). HC Lugano – Neuchâtel Hockey Academy 9:2 (3:0, 0:1, 6:1). ZSC Lions – SC Reinach (7:0, 2:0, 3:0). SC Weinfelden – EV BOMO Thun 1:4 (1:1, 0:2, 0:1).
