With their first shot on goal, the Utica Comets were able to take the lead after 2:55 in the first period. Former ZSC-forward Ronalds Kenins set up Alex Friesen in a 2-on-1 rush for Utica's go-ahead goal. Syracuse, however, was able to score the equalizer in minute 16. It was a Swiss production: Tanner Richard tossed the puck in front of the net and Joel Vermin forced the shot home.
In the end, the Syracuse Crunch were able to get a 2-1 win in this record-setting atmosphere. The previous indoor attendance record in US hockey history of 28,183 was set on April 23, 1996 by Syracuse's parent club, the Tampa Bay Lightning in a Stanley Cup playoff game against the Philadelphia Flyers.
